A brilliant political analysis by Victor Davis Hanson, for movie lovers and othersHenry Mark Holzerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09152550314383172733noreply@blogger.comBlogger2125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-955008952156625930.post-9503315237570656812018-11-30T05:40:40.590-07:002018-11-30T05:40:40.590-07:00Mr. Holzer's column motivated me to watch Shan...Mr. Holzer's column motivated me to watch Shane last night after many years. Movie buffs know that Shane was made in reaction to High Noon which was seen by many as un-American since the townspeople refused to help Sheriff Kane when the bad guys came into town.

Another view though is that High Noon was an intentional metaphor for the House Un-American Activities Committee where the bad guys are McCarthy and his committee and Sheriff Kane was the screen writer, Carl Foreman. While writing the screenplay Carl Foreman was asked by the Committee to testify against his Hollywood friends. Foreman had to make a decision, either betray his friends or lose his Hollywood career. As he pondered what to do he changed the script to write himself in as Will Kane, the stoic sheriff forced to defend the town alone; HUAC as the murderous gang intent on killing Kane; and the townspeople who stood by passively refusing to help as the hypocritical Hollywood establishment. Foreman chose not to testify. Blacklisted in Hollywood, he moved to England where under pseudonyms continued writing screenplays including Oscar-winners The Bridge of the River Kwai and The Guns of Navarone.

Similarly, Shane could be viewed from two perspectives. 1) As Mr. Holzer suggests with Shane playing the role of Trump, or 2) Trump as Wilson, the psychopathic gunman brought into town by the old establishment in an effort to preserve a passing lifestyle. The cattlemen had civilized the country, just as coal and steel built early America. But in 1880 farming was the future just as high tech is today. So maybe the way to determine whether Trump was Shane or Wilson is to ask, who would have worn the MAGA hat -- the farmers or the cattlemen?Ron Grunerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03824733166872110026noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-955008952156625930.post-82849942388255447572018-11-27T15:42:38.393-07:002018-11-27T15:42:38.393-07:00Always enjoy VDH, and this was no exception. If asked, I will always remember Trump, he get my personal award for standing up and shoring up the many weak-minded in our country. Shane, get a trophy, and Trump gets a bigger one, because he's done more for this country than any President I have known in my lifetime, and I'm old. And, I didn't know or believe he would be a great or good president. I adore the man, and am grateful to the man above for bringing him to us at such a critical time. He's just what we needed and still need.
Never forget, Trump.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
